Start here for audition instructions for both new and returning members.
Every season, all new AND returning BAYS students will submit a new application and $30 non-refundable application/audition fee. The season runs from September – April. Once your application and $30 fee is received, all new students will be scheduled to audition. If accepted, students will then be placed into one of three levels: Symphony, String or Preparatory.
Current BAYS Students: Students that maintain uninterrupted membership from season to season must submit an application and $30 non-refundable application fee but do not have to re-audition unless they are wishing to move up an orchestra level. Any student that discontinues membership for any reason, for any length of time, must audition again as a new student.
- Current Preparatory or String level students wishing to move up a level must formally request an audition via email after submitting an application and $30 non-refundable application/audition fee.
- Current Prep and String students may request only one ‘move up’ audition per season. The audition material and requirements for String and Symphony level are below. NOTE: There is a tuition increase of $170 for String level students who are accepted to move up to Symphony.
Students making the TMEA All-State High School ensembles are automatically accepted into the Symphony. All-State students will need only to submit an application, $30 application fee, and proof of All-State membership. Prospective All-State students requesting membership into Symphony will be accepted until all positions are filled.
All new, prospective students requesting an audition must submit a completed application and non-refundable $30 fee and be in compliance with BAYS guidelines and requirements. Once the audition process is complete, all new members will be notified of orchestra placement. Audition scheduling questions? Please contact Karen Dinardis for scheduling information.

Audition Preparation and Attire:
BAYS offers three separate orchestra levels. Students shall consult with their private lesson teacher to determine which orchestra level to prepare for. The audition time is approximately 10 minutes and is closed to parents and the general public. BAYS is comprised of student musicians meeting the criteria set forth in the audition and skill requirements below. Sight-reading is not required and will not be requested.
Students are strongly encouraged to dress for success and respect and choose dressy-casual clothing that will be comfortable to perform their audition in. It is recommended that the student refrain from wearing strong fragrances, hats, bandannas, sneakers, jeans, shorts, tee-shirts, or flip-flops to the audition. Cell phones or any type of recording device are not permitted inside the audition room.
Symphony Level: Audition and Skill Requirements for Symphony Level Strings, Woodwind, Brass, and Percussion Players
The Symphony Orchestra, is a full symphony orchestra catered to the more advanced player. Special attention will be given to the level of the solo selected and the number of octaves and difficulty of the scales the student chooses. If a student has been accepted for All Region at any level, please include this information on the application. Please refer any audition questions for the Symphony Orchestra to Trond Saeverud.
Symphony level players, please prepare the following for your audition:
1. A piece (or excerpt from a solo) and at least two scales of your choice. The solo should be representative of your overall musical and technical ability. Solos and excerpts should be no more than 3 minutes in length. Portions of state or region auditions may be used.
2. Download the Music Excerpt sheet for your instrument below. Prepare the excerpt(s) within the brackets as marked. Memorization of music excerpts is not required.
Music Excerpts for Symphony Level Auditions (download and prepare the excerpt(s) within brackets):
Please note that the slurs in several of the excerpts indicate phrasing, only, and are not intended as bowings – especially in the Brahms movements. It is crucial that you work with your teacher and put in bowings that work well for you while still retaining the appropriate style and articulation.
